Every warning light is a sentence — most of them are shorter than you fear. Here's the plain-English version of the usual suspects.
Check engine
"Something's off in the engine or emissions system." Could be a loose gas cap or something serious — the scan tells us which.
Battery light
"Your car isn't charging." Usually the alternator, not the battery — keep driving and you'll stall.
Oil pressure
"Stop as soon as it's safe." Low oil pressure can wreck an engine in minutes. This one means now.
Tire pressure (TPMS)
"A tire is low." Often just temperature swings — Utah's freeze-thaw loves triggering this one.
ABS
"Anti-lock brakes have a fault." Your regular brakes still work, but get it checked before slick roads.

My check-engine light is on but the car drives fine. Can I ignore it?
For a little while, maybe — but "fine" isn't a diagnosis. Some codes are harmless; others are your engine asking politely before it asks loudly. A scan is cheap insurance.
Will the auto parts store's free code read do the same thing?
It'll give you a code; I give you a diagnosis. My job is finding the actual cause so you don't buy parts you don't need.
Can you just turn the light off?
I can clear codes — but if the problem's still there, the light comes right back and we've learned nothing. I clear codes after the actual fix, then verify it stays off.
Do you fix what you find?
Usually, yes — right then and there if I have the parts. If it's something that needs a full shop, like a transmission rebuild, I'll tell you straight and point you the right way.
